It is hardly surprising that Tobago is a centre for eco and nature tourism and birding. Tobago's diminutive size (just 50km or 25 miles long and 6 miles or 12 km, 116 sq miles in area) hides a wealth of natural treasures!! More than half of the island is covered by virgin tropical rainforest, in fact the oldest Rainforest reserve in the Western hemisphere is at Main Ridge Forest Reserve (1776). The mountains of the rainforest spawn several pretty waterfalls in addition to housing abundant tropical bird life. Little Tobago Bird Sanctuary off the northeast tip (Speyside - Charlotteville area) is an important haven for migratory birds - it's specially worth visiting to see the Red Billed Tropicbird. At the Hillsborough Dam, the island's main water supply, and at the marshlands such as at Buccoo, there is a variety of waterfowl species to be seen.

The flora and fauna are varied and abundant - with many spectacularly beautiful trees including the towering Silk Cotton or Kapok with ancient legends attached, the African Tulip or Flame of the Forest, and those breathtaking seasonal beauties .... the Yellow Poui and Pink Poui .... and so many more.
